“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,” — 1 Peter 2:2 NIV
Every baby loves breast milk until he gets weaned by his mother. Why? Research has shown that the nutrients in a mother’s breast milk are vital for the survival of babies, especially those less than six months of age.
In the same way, when you get born again, you need to be taught God’s Word, especially the foundations of the faith: repentance from dead works, faith toward God, the doctrine of baptisms, laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment (Hebrews 6:1-2). Without being taught these doctrines soundly by a teacher of the Word, spiritual maturity becomes a problem.
However, Peter, foreseeing the menace of some ministries not taking responsibility to teach every new convert the foundations of the faith of Christ in the future, got inspired by the Holy Spirit to write its solution.
He said, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk.” Some Bible translations use “as” instead of “like” in that scripture. So that verse can be a bit confusing because if the Apostle Peter was speaking to new converts, using “as newborn babes” would have been excellent.
Nonetheless, from the introduction of the epistle, Peter addressed believers from multiple locations (1 Peter 1:1). Amongst those believers, I’m sure some were more spiritually mature than others. That implies 1 Peter 2:2 isn’t just new for converts in Christ. The verse applies to everyone in Christ.
Craving pure spiritual milk will create a spiritual hunger in your spirit to know God’s Word better each day.
So whether you are freshly born again or not, craving pure spiritual milk is a must in your life as a Christian. Why? Because it’ll create a spiritual hunger in your spirit to know God’s Word better each day. In fact, that is the backbone of every genius Christian in the spiritual understanding of scripture.
Babies cry to their mothers when they are hungry. In Christ, that implies you must not casually expect to be fed by the labour of your pastor or ministers. Instead, you must pursue knowing God by yourself by becoming more deterministic in consuming sound doctrine in the Word.
However, doing something without knowing its benefit can make you lose your passion for doing it. So then, why must you crave pure spiritual milk as a Christian?
The Bible is clear. Craving pure spiritual milk will help you grow up in your salvation. So yes, you are born again. But as you spend time knowing God daily, you’ll become firmly rooted in Christ, so much so that nobody will be able to stray you off the God you’ve believed.
When Apostle Paul got to that level in his life, he said he was fully persuaded and that he had come to know whom he had believed (2 Timothy 1:12). Can you say that about your walk with God?
Evaluate your life. Examine your work and walk with God. It’s time to know God better, not just to use Him to satisfy your selfish pleasures. Create time within your days to spend alone with God.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, help me to stay on course wherever I go. Lead and guide me to know and understand you better each day. Create in my heart a spiritual hunger that never fades to know you. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen!
