[1] “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, [2] as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, [3] if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” — I Peter 2:1 - 3 NKJV
Peter, according to His introduction in 1 Peter 1:1-2, didn’t write his first epistle to baby Christians or new converts, but to mature ones whose souls got purified by terrible trials they faced because of their faith (see 1 Peter 1:22). So reading 1 Peter 2:1-3 and speaking about it as if it refers to babes in Christ is problematic because the Apostle was showing the recipients of the letter what to do to keep growing in the Lord. That goes to us believers of today, regardless of each person’s level of spiritual maturity.
Therefore in verse 1, he says we should lay aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy and all evil speaking. And after doing that, we should desire the pure milk of the Word, just as babies desire and even cry for breast milk from their mothers. How hungry are you spiritually to see growth in your knowledge of God?
Today’s devotion is a call unto deeper levels of intimacy. It’s not about how much you already know about God because there’s always room to know Him better by the spirit of revelation each day (see Ephesians 1:17-18). Don’t relax in your personal Bible study, prayer schedule or fellowship with the brethren. Keep moving forward because you’ll never regret doing that.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You that desiring the pure milk of Your Word is what I need to do to keep growing in divine knowledge of You. Never allow me to slack in taking Your Word seriously. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
