[11] “But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.” – 1 Corinthians 5:11 (NKJV)
The Corinthian church was one church noted for fostering a lot of immorality amongst themselves in the early church days. It was even reported that some of them were committing incest (see 1 Corinthians 5:1), something even unbelievers, by then, weren’t so engaged with. So because of these happenings, hypocrisy was rampant among them. And so for Paul to help save the pure ones from the hypocritical ones, he told them that those who are clean shouldn’t keep company with the hypocrites. Why? Because bad company corrupts good manners (see 1 Corinthians 15:33). Today, this same principle applies to every Christian on the face of this Earth.
You must constantly be watchful of the people you keep in company with. In other words, you have to edit your friends as you live intentionally. Some people will force themselves into your life but have bad intentions towards you.
Hypocritical people are usually hard to notice at the onset. Because attitude is like pregnancy, it shows off fully with time. Accept people as Christ accepted you. But distinguish yourself from hypocritical believers who act like sheep on the outside but are actually wolves on the inside.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to cultivate meaningful relationships in my life. May I never end up in any wrong friendship that has an adverse effect on my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
