The Principle of Cleaving in Marriage

[24] “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:24 (NKJV)

The Book of Genesis is one of the most loved books in the Bible. It contains so many things and revelations that are dear to me. Today, I want to speak briefly about the principle of cleaving in marriage from Genesis 2:24.

From the anchor text of the devotional, when God joins a man with his wife in holy matrimony, the man ought to leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. Today, it’s rather that most ladies leave their parents’ home to join their husbands in a separate place, which is okay. The command was for the man to leave. So, the man should get a specific place outside his parent’s house large enough to accommodate him and his newly wedded wife. That further means you need money as a man because it takes a lot to either rent or build a large enough home to accommodate others.

However, with all these said and done, there is a higher reason why God commands the man to leave his parent’s abode—so he can be joined to his wife. Other Bible versions use “cleave” instead of “be joined,” which means the same. God wants your marriage to be free from parental interference. So, living with your wife in your parent’s home is never advisable. Don’t do that.

For you to become one flesh with your wife, you need intimacy. That intimacy is exclusive to God, and it requires privacy. Prepare for your marriage, and never hesitate to ask God for help as you prepare to marry.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, for anyone planning to marry, give them adequate resources to go through the process devoid of struggles, In Jesus’ name. Amen!
