Dear Wife, Follow Your Godly Husband

[14] “So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,” — Matthew 2:14 NIV

If I’m told to mention one submissive wife I highly revere in the New Testament, I’ll point out Mary. She never fought with her husband and never argued as to why Joseph took her and little Jesus to Egypt in the night. There’s not even a hint of marital struggle in her life recorded in the Bible. That’s an excellent wife and a great mother of our Lord Jesus. I will never doubt that God ever made a mistake in choosing her to be Jesus’ mother. But what can we learn from her life?

Here’s one: dear wife, follow your godly husband. He’s your head in the marriage. Although it’s good to agree with him on decisions taken concerning the family, be submissive. In case there’s a disagreement, don’t end up fighting. Even if you’re not comfortable with a decision God leads him to take today, and yet he explains the future impact of that decision, obey him.

There are many reasons why God has given husbands that authoritative spirit and ego. When such husbands have submitted to Christ, they’ll use it for the benefit of themselves and their families. I’ve seen too many families face attacks, especially vision-wise and financial struggles because the father or husband didn’t obey Jesus.

If you’re not married, please don’t marry an unbeliever. The negative impact it’ll have on your life is too damaging to risk yourself with it, all in the name of butterflies in your heart – which you may interpret as love. But if you’re married or in a relationship with a godly man, learn submission unto him when he acts as the leader of your home (or future home). Join him not to rebel against God’s principles but to execute God’s will. Maintain that gentle and meek spirit, woman. The Lord is with you.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer (for women):

Father, thank You for giving me a gentle and meek spirit. Help me become more submissive to my partner when You lead Him to make essential decisions in our family. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
