[6] “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.” – Genesis 3:6 (NKJV)
After carefully observing how worldly systems work, I realised one evil thing. When a person does something evil for a long time, his conscience gradually sears off. That is why scammers continue to do it even though they have stolen many people’s money. They find nothing wrong with it because they are deeply plunged into that sin. What a tragedy!
God told Adam not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (see Genesis 2:16). That time, God hadn’t formed Eve yet. So, she came unaware of that commandment. But when the serpent came and asked her about that fruit, she told it that,
[2] “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; [3] but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” – Genesis 3:2-3 (NKJV)
Look at that! She added “nor shall you touch it” to the instruction. I suppose Adam told her she should not eat from that tree. But to prevent her from even going near it in order not to get tempted, he may have told her not to touch it. Or, probably God taught Eve this instruction later on since He usually visited them in the cool of the day (see Genesis 3:8). Yes, there isn’t a scripture that shows how frequently God visited Adam and Eve. Still, if God’s visitation were rare, they wouldn’t have gotten used to His movements. This couple knew God was coming for a visit, and that’s how they hid from Him (see Genesis 3:8).
Eve’s continual staring at that forbidden tree watered down her conscience of not eating from it, and she later succumbed to that lust. Don’t let that be your case. You are not supposed to flirt with things God has called you to flee from and think you have enough strength to face that temptation. No! Don’t go near it as much as possible. Have covenant eyes – avoid staring at forbidden things, lest God’s shield of protection on your life against unholiness gets eluded by any lustful feeling that develops within you. May the Lord help you.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, give me wisdom and tenacity to avoid staring at anything you have labelled as “forbidden” according to scripture and in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
