“For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.” — Galatians 6:3 - 4 NKJV
A common struggle many people face without letting others know is their source of drawing their identity. As believers in Christ, we’re reminded many times in scripture that our identity is in God, not in what we do or how many things we have. Yet, some haven’t laid hold on this truth.
In Luke 18:9-14, Jesus narrated a parable of two people, a tax collector and a Pharisee, who came before the Lord to pray. The tax collector humbled himself and asked for forgiveness from the Lord. However, the Pharisee poured out his words exclaiming how well he had lived unto God as compared to others. He was before God, yet he sourced his identity from what he has been able to do and not how God has cared for and had mercy on him.
We’re not created in Christ to live better than others. Instead, we ought to live in conformity to Christ. Jesus has and will always be the standard. You might do well to live out the truth of God’s Word better than others. But that doesn’t mean you’ve attained the highest measure of Christ.
So Galatians 6:4 says, “…let each one examine his own work…”. Friend, you’ve got to test your actions. Examine your work unto the Lord and how you’re practising the realities in the Bible. Keep yourself in check. By doing so, you’ll not be a quick fault-finder of other people’s lives but your own critic first.
God loves you and wants you to have everything He has made available pertaining to eternal life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). But you must know Him. Study the Bible, read, and check the words you speak. Be Christ-conscious. For life is all about Jesus.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Oh God, thank you for your abundant provision of everything I need pertaining to eternal life and godliness. Help me to examine my work unto You so that I’ll fulfil Your mandate upon my life in excellence as I live unto you. Amen!
