[13] “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” – Galatians 5:13 (NIV)
In the 20th Century, several nations fought very hard to gain independence from colonial masters. Since then, many countries have been governed by democracy. That shows how essential people in this world value freedom. Nobody likes oppression. But unfortunately, many are in bondage to the devil without even being aware of it. You may ask, why do I say this? Well, it’s because anybody who isn’t born again is under the oppression of the evil one. You either belong to God or the devil but never neutral.
Now, as believers, we are called to be free. That means we have freedom in Christ. But that freedom, although limitless, has a good way of using it, for which it must glorify God, not the devil. That is what the Apostle Paul meant when the Holy Spirit inspired him to write, “… do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh…”. In Galatians 5:17, the Bible clarifies that the desires of the flesh and those of the Spirit are constantly at war with each other, particularly in the mind. But you must always resist the devil, for that is the only way to make him flee with his sinful thoughts.
Your usage of your freedom in Christ will constantly be tested, and you must be determined to let God win the battle at every time. You’ll often receive offers, even huge ones, to engage in evil without anyone watching you. But remember, God is with you. So, just as you are called to be free, update your mind to do what the Word says so that God will always be proud of you.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for giving me freedom in Christ. Help me to use it effectively to do things that glorify Your holy name. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
