“For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” — Romans 8:6 NKJV
Every human being on this earth has one’s mind governed by two entities – flesh or Spirit. The word “govern” in the scripture above means “bringing to conformity with rules, principles or usage.” So for a person’s mind to be under government, it means he has no control of his predominant thought patterns but can either be subject to flesh or the Holy Spirit.
Believers in Christ are already living in the Spirit (Romans 8:9). However, living in the Spirit is different from walking after the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:25). When you walk after the Spirit, the first sign of this reality is that your mind will become preoccupied with spiritual things, so you’ll become subject to God’s purposes.
Now, if I stop right here, there’ll be a problem. Why? Because some people think “spiritual things” are all about prayers, fasting and Bible reading. That’s just a little aspect of it. When the Bible speaks of spiritual things, God is referring to anything and everything that glorifies Christ on the face of this earth.
For example, some assume that marriage is a distraction from God’s calling because both partners will keep thinking about each other. For the thoughts, it’s true, but for the distraction, it’s false. Once you marry correctly in Christ, your marriage will enhance the fulfilment of your divine purpose; it’ll not diminish it. Moreover, being mindful of each other deeply reveals the practicality of Psalm 8:4.
“What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?” — Psalms 8:4 NKJV
It’s only in godly relationships and marriage that God teaches us how He thinks about us so much. So in the case of being conscious of each other, you’re mimicking the ways of God in your life. That’s also spirituality in Christ.
So many things people see as earthly have spiritual meaning to them. If only we would study the scriptures and possess spiritual understanding, it’ll become easy to distinguish what’s flesh and what’s from the Spirit.
When your mind is governed by spiritual things, you’ll see the practicality of eternal life and peace in your heart and mind. To be spiritually minded is indeed life and peace. Deal with thoughts that lead to committing evil things, and cleave to what’s good.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, I subject my mind to Your Word. Lead and guide me in the way everlasting. Help me to build spiritual systems and structures to help me and my family commit to feeding on Your Word daily. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
