[22] “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;” – Ephesians 4:22 (NIV)
Paul’s letter to the Ephesian church has much to say to this generation, even though its primary recipient was the Ephesian believers in those days. Nevertheless, God’s Word never runs archaic and has never lost a single bit of power. Do you know why? Jesus, the Word-incarnate, lives forever (see Revelation 1:18). He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (see Hebrews 13:8). Today, what Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:22 also applies to you.
As a believer, even though nothing physically changed about your life the moment you got born again, you are a new creature in Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:17). What is new, as declared by God in scripture, is indeed new. So, in Christ, you are not a refurbished human being. You are new. But it takes a lot of time for an average believer to accept this truth and live in its consciousness. So, because of that, many are saved but still live like unbelievers.
It’s sad to say that many believers in church still listen to worldly music, fornicate, watch porn, speak lies, and engage in all forms of fleshly lust. According to Ephesians 4:22, anyone who lives such a life will eventually be corrupted. In other words, such a person’s life is bound to end up badly if he doesn’t repent. But many don’t know. They think sinning is normal and there’s no lasting effect on their evil ways. What a tragedy!
If you are a believer who has been feeding your fleshly lusts, there is a warning from scripture for you today. You must put off your old self consciously. In fact, God won’t descend from above to do that for you; you must do it yourself. But the question is, how?
If you’re required to put off your old self, the absolute thing to do is put on your new self in Christ. That means you must always live conscious of who God says you are and not who you used to be when you weren’t born again. To tell you the truth, it requires a lot of work. You must intentionally sow in the Spirit by constantly fellowshipping with the Lord. Please take this seriously.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, guide me to live as You have made me in Christ. Help me to put off my old self by starving my flesh. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
