“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.” — Galatians 6:1 NIV
Restoration is a term used to describe a help given to uplift someone who has fallen in something. In Christ, there is restoration. The Bible teaches us that God is the restorer of wasted years (Joel 2:23-26). But brethren in Christ can also bring gentle restoration to people caught in sin.
In Galatians 6:1, we understand that if anybody is caught red-handed in a sin, fellow Christians shouldn’t condemn that person, even if it’s adultery or fornication. But those who live by the Spirit should restore the person in the faith. Every Christian lives in the Spirit (Romans 8:9), but not all live by the Spirit [walk in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25)]. That is why two different Christians can encounter someone else doing something wrong, yet one will condemn the fellow, and the other will bring gentle restoration to him. We all have Christ in us, but not all walk in His consciousness.
2 Corinthians 2:7 teaches us how to bring gentle restoration to someone caught in sin. The first step is forgiveness, and the second is comfort. Jesus has given us the power to remit people’s sins (John 20:23). So when a brethren is caught in sin such as lying, proclaim the forgiveness of God over the person’s life. Then, comfort him to help him get rid of guilt.
If God doesn’t condemn us for our sins but sent Jesus to die for us, we have no right to declare a brethren unrighteous just because he (or she) did something wrong. Love one another as Christ loved us while we were still sinners.
You’re a blessing.
