[17] “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, [18] so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” – Matthew 6:17-18 (NIV)
When I was a newbie in Christ, I thought every decision about fasting and prayer had to be announced by church leaders. And so for months, I didn’t bother myself to ask whether I could decide to fast myself or not. I just kept eating and studying the Word till a time came when I stumbled on the word “when” in Matthew 6:17. “When” implies that something will definitely happen. So Jesus expects you to decide to fast yourself as an individual.
It is only a baby and a child that relies on his parents to tell him to do what he must do. For a mature person, he can take decisions on his own and implement them. If Jesus wants you to reach a height in your faith journey in Him where you can fast without external leadership, then He desires you to mature spiritually.
It is never wrong to fast. Neither is it wrong to pray to God. In fact, fasting and praying are spiritual investments you must make in your life to draw near to God. When you fast, you’re telling God, “I want to know You more.” Obey authority and honour leaders in God’s house. But pay the price to pursue a deeper intimacy with God despite organisational boundaries in the ministry you are a part of now.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for telling me that I can decide to fast myself, whether I’ve heard from You or not. Help me to know You more each day. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
