[22] “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. [23] But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” – Matthew 6:22-23 (NKJV)
In Africa, where I hail from, there are so many countries that struggle with power crises. And so because of that, there are nights people sleep without electricity. What happens when there’s no electricity at night or when you switch off the light bulb in your room? You’ll barely see anything. Right? Now, with this analogy, let’s look at what Jesus meant when He said your eye is your body’s lamp.
Physically speaking, blind people are one of the most deprived people in society. They can’t do anything without others guiding them. Why? Because their absence of sight has caused them to be without direction. In the same way, you have a spiritual eye as a spiritual sense as a child of God. However, how well that eye can see isn’t automated but dependent on your level of spiritual discernment. You train your spiritual eye to see by beholding God’s Word in all that you do. That is why consistent study of the scriptures, coupled with prayer and fasting, is essential in your life as a believer.
When your spiritual eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. In other words, you’ll not struggle with divine direction when your spiritual eye is functioning well. From today, decide to take responsibility for your personal spiritual growth in the Lord. Please don’t leave your spiritual well-being to chance, thinking it’ll be built over time. No! It doesn’t work like that. Be intentional about your walk with God if you want to really thrive in this life.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for giving me a spiritual eye to navigate my life according to Your direction. Please help me to keep it healthy always. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
