[34] “Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.” — Luke 11:34 NIV
Even though every human has five sense organs, the eye plays the most significant role. Imagine you can hear someone speak but are blind; you’ll not be able to discern the person speaking unless you use your mind’s eye (intelligence) to detect the voice and relate it to someone you know. How about someone touching your skin? You’ll not know the person until you discern him, either by physical looks or by your mind.
Jesus was right when he said your eye is the lamp of your body. But I believe He was speaking about the eye as a spiritual sense, not the physical eyes. The reason is that He didn’t say, “Your eyes are the lamp of your body.”
Here’s what Jesus meant by that statement: “Your level of insight in God’s Word directly affects the quality of your physical life.” So when that eye is filled with the Word of God, you’ll have a great life in the physical. But when you have poor insight into God’s Word, things won’t go well. Very simple!
I don’t see the latter as a curse but a principle. And besides, it’s something I’ve personally witnessed in several lives. I’ve realised that usually, the people who labour to study God’s Word have a joyful and high-quality lifestyle under the guidance of God’s Word and principles. But for those who don’t study and practise the Word, they end up enduring life struggles for long without finding appropriate solutions to long-lasting issues.
God’s principles work no matter what happens in this life. So the earlier you walk in them, the better.
Beloved, I want to encourage you to work to get wisdom from God’s Word. Build a system in your life to inspire you to study the Word of God frequently. If you’re studying it to teach your family during a family morning devotion, do so. If it’s to teach a few brethren, do it. If you can’t do this alone, get an accountability partner to whom you’ll be responsible for submitting what you learn from the Bible each day.
All these things, when in place, ensure your spiritual eye gets gradually illuminated with Truth so that you’ll experience the fullness of God’s package of eternal life – starting from your “now” life to as far as your life in heaven.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, I pray in the name of Jesus, help me to create a solemn structure in my life to keep me busy studying Your Word; so that my spiritual eye won’t be bankrupt of divine illumination. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
