“The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.” — Luke 11:34 - 35 NKJV
To illuminate something means to shine a light on it. As Christians, we are the light of the world because of Christ in us (John 8:12, Matthew 5:14). However, how can we shine before men if we’re not spiritually illuminated with God’s Word to live our reality?
Jesus teaches in Luke 11:34 that the lamp of the body is the eye, not the tongue, ears, skin or nose. Why? Because when the eye receives light or illumination, it’s easy to coordinate the whole body to do many things. That means it’s Jesus’ will for each child of God to be spiritually illuminated in divine knowledge through one’s spiritual eye.
The question is, “how can you be spiritually illuminated as God’s child?” There are two main things to do.
1. Follow Jesus
Jesus said in John 8:12 (NKJV) that “…He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” That means, in eternal life, you have to get light to live it well, and the way to do that is by following Jesus. Obey God at all times, friend.
2. Get exposed to God’s Word
The Bible says in Psalm 119:130 (NKJV) that
The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.
Psalm 119:130
When you get in frequent contact with the Word of God, God illuminates your eyes of spiritual understanding so that you’ll know Him better through revelation.
Friend, don’t live in ignorance. Be hungry to know God more. Study the Bible yourself. Read right Christ-centred books yourself. Pray the Word yourself. Don’t be lazy and too dependent on other people to feed you spiritually. Invest in your personal spiritual growth.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Oh God, make me committed to investing in my personal spiritual growth by giving me access to spiritually profitable resources produced by Your servants and also Your Word in the name of Jesus. Amen!
