[38] “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ [39] But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.” – Matthew 5:38-39 (NKJV)
The Israelites were a people who didn’t joke with the teachings in the Torah. They taught their children about the law till they grew up for the doctrine to become so ingrained in their minds. But they lacked one major thing, which has even cost them their salvation (not all, but the majority – who refused to see Jesus as the Messiah). They had a zeal for the Lord, but not according to knowledge (proper revelation of God).
In Matthew 5:38, Jesus mentioned a word from Exodus 21:20 that says, “…an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” He was right about it. But in further explanation, Jesus said, “… I tell you not to resist an evil person.” Why? Because love doesn’t avenge people’s faults but forgives and gives them more chances.
Take a look at your life. If God decided to punish you for every wrong thing you do, would you have survived till now? What about those who are not born again? Think of the evil things they do daily, yet God suffers long and still sends ministers to preach the gospel to them. You’re not far gone. Come to Jesus.
Just as God is merciful to you and never gives up on you, do not resist an evil person in your life. I’m not saying give your life to them to harm you entirely. No! Self-care is not selfish, said Chip Judd. All that I’m saying is that God’s love has no loopholes. So don’t demonstrate it to some sect of people and leave others. Let me tell you something. Many people tagged as evil are hurting people who just need help. Love God and love people too. It is well with you.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to show Your boundless love to people without eliminating some. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
