You Can’t Overpay the Debt of Love to the Brethren

[8] “Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.” – Romans 13:8 (NKJV)

There were many commandments that guided the lifestyle of the Israelites before Jesus came. He said emphatically that He didn’t come to abolish the law but to fulfil it (see Matthew 5:17). But in what way? Through the work of love. That is why He said in John 13:35 (NKJV) that,

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

When you love your fellow brother in the Lord, unbelievers will know that Christ lives in you without mounting a pulpit to preach to them. Isn’t that interesting? But time and time, I’ve seen people’s love for church people grow cold due to multiple offences committed against them. I’m not saying that I’ve not suffered church hurts before. In fact, I have, several times. But we cannot use our negative experiences to determine our lifestyle. People hurt Jesus and said all kinds of negative things about Him. Yet, He continued ministering to people. So should we. We’ve got to learn of Jesus.

You can’t overpay the debt of love to the brethren. When Jesus said that we should love one another as His disciples, He didn’t put an expiry date to that command; neither did He add exceptions to it. It’s true that multiple offences make love grow cold. But you ought to love people anyway. So the best thing you can do is to learn how to be unoffendable and live with an ever-forgiving heart. I pray God blesses your life with meaningful relationships that’ll cushion you from failing to walk in love.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your gift of love. As You are in me, help me to love the brethren with a pure heart despite anything wrong I see or hear people do to me. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
