Work for Food that Endures to Eternal Life

[27] “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” – John 6:27 (NIV)

Did you know that one of the principal reasons people work is to get money to buy food? Statistically, food is one of the items people overspend cash on. I’ve seen several people labour all their lives just to get something to eat every day, not to talk of using money for any kingdom work. What a tragedy! It is true that the Bible says anybody that is unwilling to work shouldn’t eat (see 2 Thessalonians 3:10). But Jesus also said in John 6:27 that we should work for food that endures to eternal life and not perishable food. Right? You might conclude that there is confusion here, but it’s not.

“Food that spoils” in Jesus’ context of the scripture refers to food that merely nourishes the human body without any kingdom impact behind it. For example, an unbeliever who works just to get something to eat doesn’t do so to contribute to the kingdom but to satisfy his hunger. However, “food that endures to eternal life” refers to the results of your labour that have lasting kingdom impact. So, from this, God doesn’t delight in you living in survival mode. He wants you to thrive so much that physical food won’t be the reason for your work. How many people understand life from this perspective?

Today, it’s common to see people fight over employment in menial jobs, work to get earthly possessions with no direct link to kingdom impact, and are satisfied doing that. My friend, God didn’t call you to embrace that lifestyle. While your work may not be so substantial for you to give some out to do God’s work, keep labouring diligently and pray for God to bless the work of your hands. Remember that everything earthly is temporary, so don’t let ALL your life goals be about getting material possessions. Kingdom wealth isn’t perishable. Go for it instead of settling for mere earthly rewards.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your immense love and support. Please help me to find kingdom meaning in what I do with my life, lest I live to satisfy earthly cravings. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
