“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6 NKJV
The environment children grow in, especially at the early stages of life, has a lot of impact on their lives. What they consistently see form images in their minds, then they grow into mentalities, and when these environmental facts and activities are terrible, they become strongholds. When it gets to this level, no amount of advice can change them; only God’s powerful Word can (2 Corinthians 10:5).
Because of this reality, Solomon the preacher said plainly in Proverbs 22:6 that “train up your child the way he should go.” He didn’t say, “train up your child your way he should go.” No, because he knows some parents will live very awkward lives before their children.
When it comes to children’s upbringing, we are supposed to raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord, especially as fathers (Ephesians 6:4). Now that means every father or potential father must know the Lord before marrying and beginning to have children. However, that’s not the case in most families in the world today.
I want to encourage you that just because many families have failed to model and submit to the ways of God in raising their kids doesn’t mean you’ll end up like them. No! You’re different because of Jesus.
Study the Bible as a parent. Let God’s Word permeate your spirit, soul and body so that God will inspire you to set up godly structures and systems to train up your child (or children) in your home.
Also, here is a quick tip for finding your mate or future spouse. Look out for godly character and the fear of the Lord in the person (especially for the females since the man you marry becomes the head of the home).
You may be reading this now and don’t know what to do because you’ve messed up, and now your children are living wasted lives. There’s hope in Christ for you. Your prayers can cause a godly change in their lives. Keep praying for your children to see the light of Jesus. Amen!
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Lord, I receive grace to train up my child (children) to model Your ways, so much so that even when I’m not around, they’ll keep obeying and serving you all the days of their lives. Amen!
