Motherhood is one great calling every woman will likely be called into. Many children have great mothers not because they are privileged but because their mothers chose to sacrifice their lives for them. As a matter of fact, some mothers are still in their marriages, as hard as it may be for them, just because of their children. That tells me parents’ sacrifices, especially mothers, can’t be overlooked. But there is more to motherhood than just raising kids. It’s about building your home.

The necessity of wisdom in a woman’s life

The scripture says in Proverbs 14:1 (NKJV) that,

The wise woman builds her house,
But the foolish pulls it down with her hands.”

Although the word “wife” is not mentioned in the scripture above, I believe this scripture is speaking more practically to married women and more theoretically to spinsters. As a married woman, you are responsible for building your house. Make your marital rest place more than merely a house but a home. And as a spinster, it’s less about depending on a man to come and marry you but more about how to obtain wisdom to build your home with your man in the future. Many women miss this, so it has become rare for people to dedicate themselves to studying the Bible, reading sound Christian content, and even serving the Lord wholeheartedly. Devotional times have become times people use to scroll social media feeds. What a tragedy!

The potency in the Word of God never fades. That means that no matter how advanced this world gets, scripture can never be broken. Dear woman, you need wisdom; I mean godly wisdom. You don’t have to be married before you start reading godly marriage books. No! Whether a spinster, single mum, or already married, build the capacity today. Learn how to serve your husband or husband-to-be and how to keep him. And don’t forget to ensure the man you settle with should be a person who is living in submission to Christ.

Establish the house with understanding.

It is one thing to obtain wisdom and another to get understanding. The scripture says in Proverbs 24:3 (NKJV) that,

“Through wisdom a house is built,
And by understanding it is established;”

Just compare this verse to the earlier one – Proverbs 14:1. The verse above is like an extension of what the preacher, Solomon, said about wisdom. So, you need understanding to ensure every house (organisation, corporation, even personal life), in this case, your home, is well established. But what does the word “understanding” mean in this verse? It implies intelligence or skillfulness.

There are people with great wisdom and gifts, but they lack understanding of how things work, so they don’t go far with what they have. As a woman, God doesn’t want that to be your story. He wants you to gain wisdom and the understanding to articulate how things should be done in your life and at home, especially as a married woman. It is beautiful to be an intelligent wife.

Pray for your home

This article won’t be complete if I don’t emphasise the power of prayer in your life. You can have wisdom and understanding and a great home manager as a woman. But prayer is the spiritual force that will ensure the enemy is kept behind doors. Pray for your husband and your kids. If your husband is inconsistent in his spiritual life, help him.

Don’t pursue God alone while leaving your family aside. Yes, the Bible indeed charges fathers to raise their children in fear of the Lord (see Ephesians 6:4), but don’t leave the work to your husband alone. Remember that if it takes two to give birth, then it takes two to raise. And if the man who impregnated you just left you, bring God in as your Father, not just in your life, but to help raise your child(ren).

Happy Mother’s Day!
