Walk Not in the Counsel of the Ungodly

[1] “Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
[2] But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.” – Psalms 1:1-2 (NKJV)

Of all the various things that influence our lives, words rank the topmost. Many parents convince their children to do things for them using words, not even actions or gestures. So, as a human, you must know that words carry influence in your life. And those words can come from God, people, the enemy or yourself.

In Psalm 1:1, the Bible says blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful. Each of these categories of influence can occur in your life. But for the purpose of this devotional, I want to highlight the first one.

Note that the Bible didn’t say, “Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk with the ungodly.” So, the scriptures don’t condone walking with ungodly people. However, influence occurs based on your associations. So you can walk with ungodly people, but you must make up your mind to influence them with the gospel and not them influencing you. It worked for people like Joseph in Egypt. He was the only God-fearing man in that land when he arrived there as a slave. And even though the whole country was in idolatry, he didn’t let go of his relationship with God.

You cannot effectively live if you’re doing nothing. So, if the Bible is telling you to walk not in the counsel of the ungodly, then there should be another influence upon your life, higher and godly enough to erase any lousy talk from surrounding ungodly people. It’s that simple. That is why the Psalmist continued to say that the one who doesn’t walk in ungodly counsel delights in the law of the Lord. And on top of that, he meditates the law day and night. The principal influence upon your life is the Bible. So, never stop studying it because the more you behold the Word, the more you become like Jesus in life.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your grace in my life. Help me to behold Your Word night and day as I seek to walk in Your will always. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
