How to Deal with a Mediocre Mindset

A mediocre person is a person who has low expectations of oneself and isn’t willing to go the extra mile to create something spectacular and extraordinary. Usually, such people have very low self-esteem.

Many people struggle mentally with mediocrity. Unfortunately, some aren’t even aware of it. Sometimes, this occurs because of a lack of exposure to great things, especially for children.

As a child of God, you must understand that God’s intention for calling you isn’t for you to remain in low positions, even though you’ll definitely have humble beginnings. Therefore, mediocrity isn’t from God. Here are three Biblical ways to help you deal with a mediocre mindset.

1. Seek to Know God

One of the ways to deal with a mediocre mindset is by seeking to know God. John Bevere once said, “Our extraordinary God didn’t create ordinary people.” If our God is extraordinary, nothing that proceeds from Him expects to remain ordinary.

Before you came into this world, God knew you (Jeremiah 1:5). You were in God’s mind before becoming a blood clot in your mother’s womb. God knows your future. His plans for you are for good, not for evil. The more you spend time in His presence to know Him, the more you’ll understand how extraordinary He has created you to impact this world for His kingdom.

2. Envision Your Future

Joseph Prince also once said, “Speak what you want to see, not what you see now.”

What fills your thoughts will definitely reflect in the words you speak. People who like and watch football very often talk about football. People who spend time with God discuss the Word of God frequently. Your exposure influences your pattern of thinking.

Once you know it and spend time in His presence, He’ll keep giving you excerpts of your future as creative ideas in your mind. And guess what? It’s one of the ministries of the Holy Spirit unto believers. You’ll see that none of the God-breathed ideas He’ll give you, especially in prayer, will ever be small, although your current position in life doesn’t reflect it. Here’s why.

If God shows you what is ordinary, you’ll not need faith and trust in Him for the extraordinary. God doesn’t give people vision based on the size of their present money and physical possessions. So that through this, believers will realize that they cannot live purposeful lives without His help. Friend, don’t downplay how bright God will make your future be despite terrible life circumstances. Depend on Him. Follow Him. Meditate on His Word. He’ll make your way prosperous.

3. Have Admirable Thoughts

In Philippians 4:8, Apostle Paul unpacks a list of thought categories that ought to fill every believer’s mind. It says,

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Among all these, one of them that I took notice of is the word “admirable.” In the King James Version of the Bible, it says “good report.”

Admirable thoughts are beautiful thoughts. Such thoughts aren’t mediocre. They don’t make you have low self-esteem. Instead, they place you in the realm of visionary thinking.

God places a very high value on your life. If that isn’t true, it wouldn’t have cost Him Jesus to die for you. Count yourself blessed to be His child. As God’s ways are higher than your ways, and His thoughts are higher than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:9), I’ll say, trust Him, and don’t lean on your understanding. He’ll take you higher each day.
