“A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” — Proverbs 11:13 NIV
One evening, I was chatting with a brother in the same fellowship when I met him by the roadside to buy food. We had a great time speaking about what each one wants to do in life and issues happening around the lives of those connected to us.
Later on, as the conversation ensued, he told me that he encountered one person I know very well gossiping about me. I was so unhappy and tried persuading him to tell me the person’s name. I tried several times, but my friend never said it.
As we parted ways after buying each person’s food, I thought, “Who could have done that?” But later, I realised that this brother didn’t want me to lose confidence in any of our brethren since he knew it’s written in Proverbs 11:13 that “a gossip betrays a confidence.”
There are so many relationships that God never wanted them to end up broken, but because of one gossip, they resulted in that way.
As Christians, we are created in Christ unto good works (Ephesians 2:10). Helping one another is part of our lifestyle in Christ. That’s why if you cannot trust anyone on earth, at least you should pray that God should help you get one trustworthy person in the Church who’ll help you and keep your secrets well.
We’re in the last days, and people betray others so much for their personal benefits. But it doesn’t matter what the masses do. The question is, “are you trustworthy?” Can you keep secrets shared by a close friend to you without letting even another close friend hear about it?
Some matters are too confidential to share with many people. If among the twelve disciples, Jesus still had a betrayer, then watch those who are in your circle. Study them closely, and be faithful to the loyal ones.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Having learnt today from Your Word that a gossip betrays a confidence, guard my heart and mouth, Lord. Make me a trustworthy friend, as I look unto you to bless me with loyal friends in my life. Amen!
