Deep Waters

“The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook.” — Proverbs 18:4 NKJV

Have you fetched water from a deep well before? Probably yes or no! If yes, you’d realise it takes little effort to lower a basin on a rope into the well but much more effort to pull that same basin after fetching the water. Why? Because the depth of the well influences the amount of strength needed to draw water from it.

In the same way, Solomon says in Proverbs 18:4 that the words of a man are deep waters (not water). In other words, consistent multivariate words from a person reveal a lot about what’s in him.

Jesus said in Luke 6:45 that

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good, and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Everyone speaks about what’s in their hearts. It’s just a spiritual principle. So if you want to change the pattern of words you say, you only have to change what fills your heart.

That’s why God isn’t only interested in people getting saved but also coming to the knowledge of the Truth (1 Timothy 2:4). He wants people to speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine (Titus 2:1).

Maybe you’re a skilled liar, a hypocrite or careless in speech. Just keep exposing yourself to God’s Word consistently. Your heart will be impacted; your mind will be filled with spiritual things, and eventually, the words you speak will be godly.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Oh God, I understand from your Word that my words are deep waters, which indicate what fills my heart. Bestow upon me the tenacity to subscribe to sound doctrine from your Word and anointed servants in Jesus’ name. Amen!
