[1] “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? [2] Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? [3] Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?” – Romans 6:1-3 (NKJV)
Have you seen a dead body before? If yes, what did you notice about it? No matter what people do to it, it is just unresponsive. Right? In the same way, the Bible says as a believer in Christ, you have died to sin. So, in essence, no part of your life should be responsive to any sinful urge. But is it the case in many Christians’ lives? I don’t think so. But why? We are dead to sin but not dead physically. So, we are still subject to temptations.
The Bible entreats us to mortify the deeds of the sinful flesh so that we will live [enjoy eternal life (see Colossians 3:5, Romans 8:13)]. That means that it is possible to live as a Christian and take advantage of the grace and freedom you have in Christ to do awful things which don’t please God. It is called living in the flesh. Its penalty is destruction (see Galatians 6:8).
When the devil tempts you and tries to make sin enticing to you in your mind, you must rise quickly to resist him steadfastly in the faith. Why? Because he is after awakening your sinful flesh (which God had put to death) and also misleading you away from God’s ways to the way of death (destruction). Many believers have backslidden because they chose to entertain and submit to sinful thoughts instead of living in the consciousness of God’s truth that they are dead to sin. Let not that be your case.
Make it a personal commitment to live a pure life unto God – both in private and public! For the Lord is omnipresent. He sees all things. Remember that sin thrives in dark places. So when you’re alone, do what pleases God because He is there with you.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, I affirm the truth in my spirit that I am dead to sin. In the name of Jesus, I choose to mortify every fleshly deed in my life in order to live in purity. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
