[14] “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. [15] But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; [16] for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” — 1 Peter 1:14-16 NIV
One thing about God is that He doesn’t wait for anyone to be perfect before accepting him into His kingdom through salvation. He embraces everyone just as they are, washes away their sins, saves them and begins to transform their lives through discipleship.
However, God knows we still live in a world that lies in wickedness. He knows there’s a possibility of His children failing to live by His standards in all areas of their lives. So just as He labours by discipling and guiding us through the Holy Spirit and His servants and other believers, He also wants us to take responsibility to live the life of grace with intentionality.
In 1 Peter 1:14-16, it’s written that we, the children of God, must intentionally decide not to conform to the evil desires we used to live in when we were not saved. All those things are the works of the flesh – talking about gossip, malice, guile, strife, hypocrisy, slander, etc. Galatians 5:17 says,
“For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”
Just because you’re saved doesn’t mean the battle to put away fleshly desires the devil suggests to you has ceased. Give no chance to him. Don’t say you’ll live pure in God’s house and do evil deeds outside it. No! God is omnipresent. He’s always with you, so live as you’ll do in Christ regardless of location.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, I pray in the name of Jesus, coming against any fleshly desire I may have allowed the devil to afflict me with it. Whether it’s an evil stronghold in the mind or an unnoticed lazy attitude, get rid of them in my life. Amen!
