ByWork is a vital aspect of our existence today, shaping and moulding the world, as we all can attest to. Regrettably, many have perceived work as burdensome and unfulfilling, driven by financial gain rather than their purpose. In this article, I want to talk about how individuals, particularly believers, can embrace the value and essentials of work and approach it with all diligence and enthusiasm. Read on and discover the joy and significance of effective work.
Understanding the purpose of work
The Bible paints a rich picture of work as more than just a means to an end. It’s about fulfilling God’s plan for creation, reflecting His character, serving others, finding personal fulfilment, using our skills wisely, and ultimately living out our divine calling in the world.
First, let’s eliminate the idea that work is a punishment. In Genesis 1:28, after creating humanity, God told man (and now us) to
“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
This verse highlights work as part of God’s plan for us. We are called to be stewards and caretakers of His creation. But many don’t see it in this light, which is disheartening. Yes, work can be stressful and even soul-crushing. But as a believer, you must see it as cultivating what God has placed in your hands.
Jesus Himself modelled the concept of service through work. He emphasised that true leadership comes through serving others (see Matthew 20:28). So, no matter your profession, your labour can be an opportunity to serve others, whether it’s your colleagues, customers, or the community at large.
Work diligently
Diligence isn’t just about working long hours; it’s about applying yourself fully to what you do. It involves focus, attention to detail, and a dedicated drive to improve. The diligent worker takes pride in his craft, continuously seeking ways to learn and grow. This dedication leads to excellence, a level of quality that not only benefits the employer but also brings a deep sense of accomplishment to the worker. The Bible emphasises the importance of diligence and excellence in whatever we do. Colossians 3:23 says,
“Work with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
That means you must be engaged in your work, approaching your tasks with dedication and a desire to do your best. In fact, taking pride in your work and striving for excellence is a form of worship, a way of showing your appreciation for the gifts God has given you.
When you labour diligently, you can take pride in your contributions. You’ll be more productive, solve problems and add value to wherever you are. That sense of accomplishment fosters a deeper level of satisfaction and will inspire you to continue striving for excellence.
Look unto God for your reward
God is your rewarder, not a man. A boss can only give you what you agreed to provide you with because of the work, but your value before God is unquantifiable. This doesn’t negate the importance of earthly rewards like promotions, recognition, or financial security. However, it suggests that these should not be your primary motivators. When you find fulfilment in serving God and making a positive impact, the external rewards become a pleasant consequence, not the sole focus.
Even as you continue working, understand that obeying God’s principles on finances is vital to becoming prosperous in the work area you find yourself in. Be transparent. Do not steal; do not be corrupt. Be open-minded when it comes to God. He can use unexpected ways and means to bless your life.
Moreover, relying on God for your reward doesn’t imply being lazy or neglecting your duties. It’s about upholding a strong work ethic while exploring a deeper purpose in your work. By aiming for excellence, helping others, and finding happiness in the process, you can attain a more satisfying labour experience. By approaching your work with a Christian perspective, you can transform your daily work into a meaningful and fulfilling experience. Remember, you are not just working for a paycheck or a boss but using your God-given talents to serve a higher purpose. Be encouraged.
