“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” — Matthew 6:24 NIV
Two masters that rule people’s lives are God and money (other versions use “mammon.”) It’s either a person is serving God or serving mammon. But what does “mammon” mean?
Mammon, from the Greek word “mammōnas,” means personal confidence in wealth. So when the Bible says that a person is serving mammon, that fellow is doing everything possible to get wealthy without connecting it to purpose.
Here’s the truth. When you work for money instead of purpose, you’re indirectly serving mammon. But when you work for your divine purpose and get money in return for your labour, you’re serving the God who rewards and blesses people to enjoy their riches and give some to others.
Jesus says you can’t serve both God and money. That means you must choose between putting God first or your money first every time in everything you do.
Money is not a problem; it’s our inclination behind it that is. Knowing why God allowed money to get invented will help you to use it effectively without becoming a slave to it.
Life doesn’t consist of an abundance of possessions. There’s a purpose for your existence, as well as every product made. You must use your life to fulfil your divine mandate capitalising on everything you have wisely, whether material like money or immaterial like wisdom.
Remember this: God first, before other things. If you walk in this consciousness, the Holy Spirit will help you to have a sense of purpose for whatever you’re doing. God’s grace be with you.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, help me to reorient my inclination about the reasons for doing anything I’m involved in. In the name of Jesus, I renounce any force that drives me to serve money instead of serving You, my God. That is my prayer. Amen!
