[24] “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” — Matthew 6:24 NIV
Growing up, I heard many childhood friends say words like “I want to be the richest person in Ghana” or “I want to be a simple ‘dosted’ rich person.” Today, some of these colleagues are rich yet without God, and some are still sailing in poverty. But today’s devotion isn’t to debunk or confirm the confessions of my infant friends. It’s to take on what Jesus said in Matthew 6:24. That is, “No one can serve two masters…”.
The two rulers of people’s lives are God and money (or mammon). Why do people work, move around here and there doing business, go to school, opening new organisations, including churches? Why do people do all these things?
I tell you the truth. If it’s not because of God, then it’s because of money. And I can say that most people fall into the second criterion because they don’t know what God has specifically called them to do.
Many people aren’t serving God in their various professions because of a lack of knowledge about their divine mandate. Look at Peter. He was a fisherman, doing all he could to get money for himself and his family. But Jesus showed up, gave him a life of purpose, and he served God till physical death.
Serving God doesn’t mean you’ll be poor. In fact, it’s the opposite. You’ll enjoy your eternal riches in Christ, both here on Earth and in heaven, but not without persecution (see Matthew 19:29). Serving God means making a godly impact by grace through the anointing of Christ in and upon you.
You might not know your unique calling. But I encourage you to serve the Lord with gladness with whatever you’re doing now. Make Him the primary inspiration of your work, not your salary, wage or compensation. He’ll guide you every step of the way.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for showing me that I can’t serve two masters. Help me channel every motive for what I do unto the Lord, not for selfish gain. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
