[26] “Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” [27] And the people answered him in this manner, saying, “So shall it be done for the man who kills him.” – 1 Samuel 17:26-27 (NKJV)
Work is good. God created it way back in the garden of Eden when He placed Adam in Eden to dress and keep it (see Genesis 2:15). But it has evolved to include diverse business areas, including agriculture, technology, finance, construction, etc. Today, people will hardly work without any reward to be given to them, and it is good. Work should be rewarding. But it’s not good to work because of the reward you’ll get, but for inner fulfilment. Many people hate their jobs but feel trapped in them because of the financial gain they get from them. Dear one, I don’t want you to end up like that. You can love your work and earn substantial wealth from it, too.
In 1 Samuel 17, David was sent by his father Jesse to deliver food to some of his brothers serving in the Israeli army. They have been on the battlefield for a while now, used to hearing Goliath defying the God of Israel. That time, the king, Saul, told the soldiers that anyone who would kill Goliath would have his daughter’s hand in marriage and that the soldier’s family would be exempted from taxes. But since nobody wanted to die, none of the soldiers tried to do it. So, when David arrived at the army base and heard Goliath speaking ill of God, he asked them what would be done for the man who killed Goliath, and they told him.
David could have gone to kill Goliath because he knew God would help him. But he inquired of the reward for that work before attempting it. Sometimes, because believers work to please God, there are people in the world who may be CEOs who tend to cheat them, especially when they are young or recent graduates from the university. If you’re part of those I’m speaking to, please listen to me. Don’t work for nothing. Take your time to evaluate the reward of the work to be offered to you before jumping in to do it. Never take on any job without counting how much it’ll cost you to move in and do it. May the Lord help you.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your provision in my life. Please give me the wisdom to navigate any offer brought before me. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
