Give to Caesar What Belongs to Caesar and to God What Belongs to God

[17] “Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” And they were amazed at him.” – Mark 12:17 (NIV)

Jesus’ ministry was plagued by conspiracies. People, especially the Pharisees and the Sadducees, constantly plotted to end His life and ministry. But none of them succeeded because the Father protected Him. Even more, Jesus knew how to answer tricky questions from these conspirators, and that helped Him elude them.

One time, the Pharisees sent some people to ask Jesus a question aimed at trapping Him. Guess the question? It was about whether the people should pay taxes to Caesar (the ruler of the Roman Empire at that time, where Israel was enslaved). But Jesus answered and said they should give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. The question, as well as the reply, is relatable to today’s generation.

Some Christians think paying taxes to the government is wrong. However, that thought is incorrect. Jesus encourages us to apply some practicality when it comes to the disbursement of money to tax agencies. Are you an entrepreneur? Don’t try to evade taxes. Pay it and have a free mind to focus on your business. Give nobody a chance to talk badly about the God you serve.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your provision in my life. Help me always to have enough to pay taxes to respective agencies as I focus on doing Your work. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
