[26] “And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, [27] and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. [28] For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. [29] But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” – Mark 4:26-29 (NKJV)
Back in Jesus’ earthly ministry days, many people were involved in farming and shepherding the flock. That’s why, in most of His parables, He used natural things to explain how things work in God’s kingdom. And one of them is the parable of the growing seed in Mark 4:26-29.
According to that parable, Jesus said there is sowing and reaping in the kingdom of God. However, what is used to sow aren’t “seeds” but “one seed” even though that seed is scatterable. That seed is the Word of God. As a minister preaches the gospel, he scatters that seed to as many people as listens to him. According to Jesus, it’s not the minister’s work to always keep checking whether that seed grows well or not in those who received it. That’s great to know as ministers.
Too many pastors want their whole congregants to follow the Word they preach to the utmost detail. Yes, it’s not an evil desire. At least, they must steward God’s sheep well. But according to Jesus, it’s not your work as a minister or shepherd to check each congregant’s individual life whether they are following the Word you preached or not. After you’re done scattering the Word, you’re indeed done.
Whether the people God has given you obey the Word you preach or not, just keep preaching. Their lives will be cleansed by the same Word when they hear it consistently (see John 15:3). Sow into God’s kingdom without looking at what men say. The Lord is faithful to His Word. Don’t dominate people’s lives. Instead, guide them in the way of the Lord.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to follow Your ways despite what men say. Strong focus I pray for. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
