“Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.” — 2 Timothy 4:2 NIV
The preaching and teaching of God’s Word is a primary tool to bring transformation in the minds of people and societies. Many things which aren’t in place in our world today are just because people aren’t living unto God in all aspects of life.
For example, when it’s about to rain, and a neighbour refuses to remove the clothes of another neighbour (should there be access) if there’s not enough friendship between them, that act becomes a manifestation of selfishness. Why? Because it shows that fellow thinks more about himself than his neighbour.
Just as Paul instructed Timothy to preach the Word, the same instruction goes unto us as children of God. We’re not only to listen to God’s Word but preach, live and apply it, even with the fiercest persecution.
However, some questions arise. “What comprises the content of the Word we preach?” “Should we children of God always teach what people want to hear or say what people don’t like?” It’s simple.
2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV) says,
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
2 Timothy 3:16 NIV
In God’s Word, there’s enough inspiration from the Holy Spirit to teach, rebuke, correct, and train people in righteousness (right living according to God’s standards). As a servant of God, you’re not supposed to preach what your congregation only likes. Instead, you ought to speak what you receive directly from the Lord as you fellowship with Him.
It’s better to say what God tells you than to twist what He has said only to sound good in people’s ears. If we keep preaching what people want to hear, how can they change?
Dear preacher, preach the Word. Correct, rebuke and encourage, but do it with patience and careful instruction. By doing this, you’ll not promote legalism but speak out of the love of God for people’s edification.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Oh Jesus, inspire me to preach Your Word just as I receive it through my fellowship with you. Amen!
