[19] “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. [20] But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” — Matthew 6:19 - 20 NIV
There are treasures on Earth, as well as treasures in heaven. They aren’t the same, but both are needful in life.
Having earthly treasures without heavenly treasures makes you physically prosperous but spiritually bankrupt. However, having heavenly treasures without physical treasures to support your work in Christ makes you anointed but frustrated because of unmet needs.
Jesus never condemned you from having either earthly or heavenly treasures. Nevertheless, He was concerned about how you store each.
In Matthew 6:19-20, Jesus said instead of piling earthly treasures for yourself, store up for yourself treasures in heaven. That means, when it comes to physical possessions, get them, but use them for the fulfilment of your kingdom assignment, not to hoard yourself in them with pride.
Earthly treasures get manufactured on purpose. When you know the purpose of a product, you’ll automatically know what to use it for.
Everything earthly is temporary.
For example, soap is used to aid us to bath or clean utensils. Using it for other things makes you abuse (abnormally use) it, and that attitude can cost you. But if you understand that without bathing, you cannot go to places, then you’ll start using the soap on purpose because it helps you to do something that affects your functionality as a purpose-driven child of God.
Everything earthly is temporary. Use what God has blessed you with to do good works. In that way, your treasures in heaven will increase since God records your good works in heaven as Christians.
Be wise, and avoid following what the world is doing. You were brought onto the earth first for God to love you and second to make an impact through your divine calling. Never miss that.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, renew every wrong mindset I have on earthly possessions. In the name of Jesus, empower me to get wisdom on the purpose and power of acquisitions; so that I’ll not abuse anything in my hands but use them for Your glory and kingdom expansion. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
