[19] “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. [20] But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” — Matthew 6:19-20 NIV
Being in the world of work for a while now, I’ve seen many young people say time and time again that their main reason for working is to get money to feed themselves and amass physical possessions, not for God’s kingdom influence. Meanwhile, Jesus said in Luke 12:15 (NKJV) that,
“… Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
Eternal life, in essence, doesn’t include the things you’ll ever work for. If it were so, then the life of God would have been very cheap. Why do I say this? Don’t even unbelievers work to get these things?
It cost the blood of Jesus to make eternal life available to us. Therefore, if you are born again, from today, see life beyond what you have. Jesus warned us in Matthew 6:19 (NKJV) that,
[19] “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
That means you must see whatever you have on earth as temporary and sometimes needful for fulfilling your divine purpose. For example, if you have a house, it’s just to help you get a place to call home after a long day’s work on your divine calling, not to pride yourself in it.
Your treasure will always be where your heart is. So don’t set your heart on earthly things. They are temporary and subject to destruction. Set your affection on things above and keep investing your life in the Spirit. Shalom!
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to base my sense of worth on You and not what I have. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
