“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” - Hebrews 13:5 NKJV
To covet something is to be consumed with desire in your heart (and sometimes to the extent of sinning) to get it. Coveteousness is terrible, but unfortunately, people do it every day without even noticing it. God knows how people have misunderstood life to consist of the abundance of earthly possessions. He knew there’d be a time people would lust for things rather than love Him and His people. Therefore, He has provided us, His children, a solution to covetousness in His Word.
In Hebrews 13:5, the Bible tells us that our conduct should be without covetousness. Then, it continues to say, “… be content with such things as you have.” So contentment is God’s solution to covetousness. But the question is, what does it mean to be content? Does it mean we shouldn’t desire to get some things for ourselves?
I define godly contentment simply as satisfaction in Christ. In other words, a content child of God is one whose trust in God is so strong and sure that no earthly desire has overpowered God’s love in his heart.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 (emphasis mine),
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things (the earthly things people seek for) shall be added to you.
Matthew 6:33 NKJV (Emphasis mine)
Listen, my friend. God knows your needs. He is with you and will provide them. You don’t need to covet another man’s possessions to get them. Understand that eternal life is all about knowing God and Jesus, whom He has Sent (John 17:3). And as you know God, His provision for your life will come to you (some without your prayer request).
Everything earthly is temporary. So don’t put your trust in something another person has that will even expire or fade away some time to come. Trust God.
