“For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” - II Corinthians 10:12 NKJV
I once heard Lisa Bevere saying, “comparison robs the Body of Christ of uniqueness.” I thought of it for a while and concluded that it is true. David says in Psalm 139:14 (NKJV),
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.
Psalm 139:14 NKJV
From this verse, anybody who falls into the trap of comparison doesn’t understand how unique, wonderful, and fearful (reverential) God has made him. That’s why it’s written in 2 Corinthians 10:12, the anchor text for today’s devotion, that those who compare themselves among themselves aren’t wise.
We see new things each day. We see people we used to be friends with making it in life as time goes on. Thoughts of comparison are bound to come when these things happen. But the question is, doesn’t God care about your life so much that He doesn’t want you to be a carbon copy of another person’s life?
Before you fall for the trap of comparison, first appreciate how far God has brought you and the things He has provided for you to enjoy. There is more God has ahead of you that hasn’t entered into the thoughts of anybody (2 Corinthians 2:9).
Let what others have achieved inspire you, but follow God’s plan for your life. Remember that everything earthly is temporary. Don’t let your heart settle on worldly matters. Depend and look unto God. He loves you uniquely.
You’re a blessing.
