“But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.” - Matthew 23:11 NKJV
“The way up is down, and the way down is up.”
I don’t remember where precisely I heard this quote from, but many ministers have spoken about this before. Most of us know that God gives grace to the humble and resists the proud (James 4:6). But few of us know there’s a strong connection between humility and servitude.
Every humble person serves. And as that person serves, God sees his good heart and then decides to lift him. Some people devalue people who serve, especially in the house of God, even without any monetary compensation. Meanwhile, it’s God’s system of forging humility in people while lifting them.
If you want to progress as a Christian, you must serve your way up. Jesus told His disciples, who were arguing about which of them would be the greatest, that the greatest amongst them would be a servant, not a megachurch pastor or a hugely followed minister.
Don’t measure greatness by your achievements. Instead, account before God about how many people’s lives get blessed by your service in His kingdom. Don’t be worried about what you don’t have now or when people don’t see the hard work you do. Serve, starting from where you are. God will lift you up.
You’re a blessing.
