[9] “For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; [10] and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” [11] So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.” – Luke 5:9-11 (NKJV)
One question I had asked myself a few years back was if Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John, sons of Zebedee, left the vast fish Jesus made them catch for them to follow Him, why did Jesus perform that miracle? After all, what is the point of catching fish you don’t need? However, Jesus was very tactical about His approach to selecting His disciples for His work. He knew that some of them had to experience a notable miracle before they’d be fully convinced. Sadly, this method isn’t used by many Christian leaders today. Even more, the rise of false prophets and teachers has also made this method of getting God-ordained helpers more difficult because of trust issues. Nevertheless, God’s method remains flawless.
Jesus told the men who followed Him that they would no longer catch fish on the sea but would fish people. In other words, their mission as fishermen changed from sea-fishing to men-fishing: the same mission but a different method. Could it be that the area God is calling you into ministry with may not necessarily take you out of your career? Maybe it’s the same area of work but with kingdom methods. You don’t always need to throw away everything you learnt in school because you feel called to be in ministry.
One renowned man of God, Dr. Myles Munroe, of blessed memory, once said that he counselled someone who wanted to go into ministry to study business administration at the university before going to a theological seminary. Why? Because, in my opinion, a firebrand ministry can’t be sustained with poor administration knowledge. It’ll just make everything disorganised.
Don’t pressure yourself to do what others are doing. You may never know how much they are paying to command such an impact. Lean on God’s direction, and be patient. He will never leave nor forsake you. Just trust Him.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your immeasurable love towards my life. Help me discern my calling well and harness every gift You have given me as I fulfil my divine mandate. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
