Nothing Is Unclean in Itself

[14] “I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.” – Romans 14:14 NIV

One of the most predominant arguments among believers during the early church times was the choice of food. Because the Jews were accustomed to Old Testament laws and decrees, they singled out some foods as unclean for believers (the people of God) to eat. So, because of that, some believers did not even eat with unbelievers. But many didn’t know that the blood of Christ had taken away the sin of the world (see John 1:29).

Today, because of the cleansing power in the blood of Christ, your choice of physical food is not a problem to God, except the one you are fully aware of that is dedicated to idols or the one harmful to your health. Have you labelled some things in your life unclean because of your beliefs? Maybe it’s time to change how you think towards those things. Please, I’m not talking about sinful acts, but things like women wearing trousers, women covering their heads in church, and some other doctrinal questions.

Yes, I totally understand that some of these things stir up controversies in some churches. But can you set them aside and keep the main thing as the main thing? I mean, make Jesus the epicentre of everything you do. And if this is your consciousness, the problem shifts from how you perceive it to what Jesus would have done in your situation. Pursue a deeper intimacy with God, and your spiritual discernment will sharpen to distinguish between clean and unclean things well.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, as Your Word tells us that nothing is unclean in itself, help us be more spiritually discerning in any conflicting situations we handle. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
