Acquire Knowledge through Discernment

“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.” — Proverbs 18:15 NIV

To discern something means to perceive that thing in order to understand it beyond its physical presentation. For example, three boys can be walking by a roadside as a car approaches them. However, one can discern in his heart that the car may hurt him if he doesn’t stay in his walking lane. And because of that, he’ll be mindful of where he is just as the car approaches the three of them.

From the above scenario, the discerning boy didn’t just see a car. He perceived that that car might harm him, and from that understanding, he became cautious of how he must walk by the roadside.

In the same way, we encounter many people each day as Christians. It’s easy to trivialize people, whereas some can be angels (Hebrews 13:2). As long as your spiritual senses aren’t in constant use, you cannot acquire knowledge through discernment about everyday life happenings.

Checking today’s devotional anchor text (Proverbs 18:15), the heart of discerning people acquires knowledge. That knowledge is uncommon because a discerning person can see beyond the physical realm.

In Christ, you have spiritual senses. Put them to use, and it’ll be easy to discern between good and evil. That is, you’ll know the things that must have your attention and the things which are unprofitable to you.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, create avenues in my life to put my spiritual senses to use; that I will acquire your divine knowledge from everyday life happenings profitable unto me. Amen!
