Do Good to Your Enemies

[35] “But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.” – Luke 6:35 (NKJV)

When was the last time you thought of God giving rain to some people? I don’t think you’ve ever been. Why? Because when God supplies rain to an area, everyone in that area benefits, including evil people. The scripture says God is kind to the unthankful and evil. And if this same God now dwells in us by His Spirit as believers, then we ought to love as He does.

Prior to Jesus telling the Israelites to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them, there was a doctrine they used to live with. That is, “love your neighbour and hate your enemy” (see Matthew 5:38). That doctrine was not part of the laws of Moses. It was their traditions that made them live by that doctrine. Today, some people are living with false doctrines in their subconscious minds, usually formed due to bad life experiences.

God never said that we should live based on doctrines formulated from life experiences. He urged us in His Word, specifically Joshua 1:8, to meditate in His Word in order to live according to everything written therein. Here’s something I’ve discovered about life. If you don’t consistently study the scriptures, you’ll not have enough divine knowledge to live according to the ways of God in every life endeavour. For example, many people don’t forgive people who offend them because either they don’t know the weight of sin God has forgiven them, or they’ve forgotten how wretched they were before they got saved.

Do good to your enemies. But generally speaking, do good to people regardless of race, skin colour, or any form of affiliation. Humans don’t read minds. You may never know how good or evil another person thinks about you. So do yourself a great honour to bless people with what God has abundantly provided in your life. May the Lord strengthen you!

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me to do good to my enemies, especially when they come to me for help concerning anything I can do for them. Help me to repay evil with good always. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
