Jesus Doesn’t Measure Your Offering First by the Size You Give

[1] And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, [2] and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. [3] So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; [4] for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.” – Luke 21:1-4 (NKJV)

Did you know that Jesus doesn’t measure your offering first by the size you give? Yes, He checks your heart first, not the size. But is giving vast amounts of money good? Of course, it is because it helps run several ministries. I have been a minister for over eight years (at the time of this writing), and I can’t overemphasise how important finance is in ministry. Sometimes, some churches don’t teach sound doctrine about offering and giving in God’s house, but they stress too much about getting so much money from the congregants. Is it a good thing? Of course not!

One time, Jesus was in the synagogue, watching people put their gifts into the treasury (what we call the offering bowl these days). He saw the rich put hefty amounts in the treasury but never commented. However, Jesus saw a certain widow putting in two mites. In today’s currency, it’s just a few cents and doesn’t even amount to a dollar. And He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had”.

Think about this statement. Jesus rated what the woman gave (a physically low amount) higher than what the rich men gave. Indeed, God doesn’t see the way man sees. Jesus’ comment doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give an appreciable amount as your weekly offering. No! He is saying that check your heart as you give. Plan your regular offerings, and make sure that you are giving cheerfully and not out of compulsion or unwillingness.
