[9] “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;” – Proverbs 3:9 (NIV)
In the Old Testament, people used to bring farm produce to the temple of the Lord as an offering. That is why you see the words “firstfruits” and “crops” in today’s devotional anchor text. Literally, the Preacher was speaking about these physical things. Today, we hardly see people bringing farm produce to church as an offering. It’s no longer practised, although some pastors receive food items from church members for their homes.
God knows this world will change and keep changing. That is why He inspired the Preacher to start Proverbs 3:9 by writing, “Honour the Lord with your wealth…” It is intentional. No matter how advanced the world is, money won’t expire in its usage in the church. Today, there is cryptocurrency everywhere, yet real cash is still needed.
God wants you to honour Him with your wealth. But you may ask, what is the meaning of the word “honour” in the scripture? Well, from the Strong’s Concordance, it means a lot of things. Some are: promote, bring to, glorify. All these three point to blessing the work of the Lord with your finance so that things will go on well. It’s evident that a church that doesn’t have adequate finances usually doesn’t do much. No matter how much you earn, be intentional about supporting God’s work with some.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to honour You with my wealth. May I not be so selfish that I neglect Your ministry’s financial needs. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
