[29] “Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? [30] For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The LORD will judge His people.” [31] It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” — Hebrews 10:29-31 NKJV
Several people have asked me questions on whether God will forgive a Christian if he sins deliberately. And usually, I point out Hebrews 10:26-31 to them. Those verses answer that question totally. But when I was about to write today’s devotional, I sensed a strong warning sent out by God Himself upon all His children who tend to treat sin as a light issue.
Grace is higher than the law. It has the capacity to save you and also to sustain you in the faith to live above the dictates of sinful flesh. But what grace doesn’t do is to take away your own will from you, although it empowers you to live unto God. Ask yourself that as a child of God, has God dictated the time you have to sleep or even take a bath? You do all these things in life because you decided to do so. Right?
In the same way, when it comes to living above sin, there’s the Holy Spirit, referred to as the Spirit of grace in Hebrews 10:29. God says any believer who sins willfully insults the Spirit of grace. In other words, a child of God who deliberately sins ignores the promptings of the Holy Spirit just before engaging in such evil deeds. And that’s dangerous.
I want to repeat what scripture says in Hebrews 10:31 (NKJV) – “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Friend, don’t be an example of how God judges His children who put grace aside to engage in evil acts. Don’t insult the Spirit of grace by neglecting the promptings of the Spirit to practise holiness, or else you’re indirectly telling God that Jesus’ death on the cross was not enough to purge you of all kinds of sins. For your own sake, place intentionality on living a holy life, whether in secret or public.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to live a holy life that submits unto Your principles, whether in secrecy or public. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
