Do The Work of An Evangelist

“But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” — II Timothy 4:5 NKJV

1st and 2nd Timothy are pastoral books where aged Paul was coaching Timothy, his son, in the ministry. He had faced all kinds of trials, grown in experience and became robust in faith. Beginning the 4th chapter, Paul told Timothy to preach the Word in and out of season. Why? Because he had encountered how some preachers left the faith because of afflictions (take Demas as an example — 2 Timothy 4:10) and also how some preach the Word for selfish reasons.

When you have a mentor in Christ, and you listen to him, you’ll reduce so many mistakes in life; because that person will teach you which paths are good to take and wrong to abort. So yes, Timothy was a pastor and not an evangelist. Nevertheless, Paul told him to do the work of an evangelist. Why? Because he knew that without evangelism, people would not encounter Jesus and be saved.

Ministers, evangelism is part of your work. It can be done in various forms. However, it should never get neglected as part of ministry work.

Today is 30th December, and you may be documenting new year’s resolutions. In fact, they aren’t bad per se. Do them as long as you’ll commit your time to build them in your life permanently. But as a Christian, make it a point to evangelise to the lost with or without the involvement of others. That is ministry unto God.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Father, I receive grace to do the work of an evangelist despite my specific call in the body of Christ. Let me not become too self-conscious that I’ll fail to reach others for Christ. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen!
