[38] “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ [39] But I tell you not to resist an evil person.” – Matthew 5:38-39 (NKJV)
There were many things the Israelites held onto that Jesus corrected. One of them is the spirit of revenge. Back in the Old Testament, people were told to avenge others who committed evil to them. But in the New Testament, love is the fulfilment of the law (see Romans 13:10). So vengeance is God’s work, not ours. Unfortunately, we live in an evil world where people don’t care about hurting even innocent people for selfish gains. And this has been a subconscious mentality the devil has succeeded in infiltrating people’s minds with.
As a child of God, your primary source of doctrine for your life is the Word, not cultural beliefs, racial beliefs or even your own experiences. Again, it is the Word of God. So, you must submit to God’s Word every day and use it for your decisions. But what happens is that when we are freshly born again, the mind is not yet transformed. So, there are still some doctrines we hold onto until God’s Word destroys them, as it purges our thoughts through preaching.
Beware of lingering doctrines stored up in your subconscious memory that are dictating how you make decisions. For example, if you have had past experiences with marital trauma, don’t let it create a doctrine in your mind that marriage is hard for everybody. That is not true, my friend. Jesus is the standard, not any substandard thing happening in the world.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, purge my mind of any lingering doctrine contrary to Your written Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
