The Lord Disciplines Those He Loves

[11] “My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, [12] because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” – Proverbs 3:11-12 (NIV)

At the time of this writing, I am a bachelor with no child. However, I have been privileged to lead several teams in many different places in the ministry. So, even though I don’t have biological fatherhood privileges, I, by the grace of God, have a lot of experience disciplining people I work with. And I can tell you, it is not that easy, especially if that team member doesn’t accept the fact that what they did was wrong.

There is a reason why the Preacher used the word “despise” in relation to discipline in Proverbs 3:11. God knew that even though He has many children, some can disregard His disciplinary instructions. It’s like a little child ignoring the advice of his grown father. You are not God’s co-equal. He existed even before the beginning of time. So, if He chastises you, you should take it seriously. This is not about a dad who’s ignorant about certain trends of life at this age since, during his time growing up, he didn’t experience those things. No! We are talking about God here.

The Lord disciplines those He loves. If He prunes you and allows you to feel His disciplinary deeds in your life, it isn’t because He hates you but because He loves you so dearly. As a child will always cry when his dad disciplines him, so will it be uncomfortable when God chastises you. Be not dismayed. God is with you.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your disciplinary acts in my life. May I remain sober under Your feet as I live to fulfil everything You have said concerning my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
