The Chastening of God

“For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” - Hebrews 12:6 NKJV

To chasten, as used in the Bible verse above, means to discipline or correct. God chastens those He loves. That means love isn’t all about giving. It’s also about chastening (discipline). When you’re not born again, it is pointless for God to correct you for sinning because you need deliverance (salvation), not correction. But if you are born again, you need the chastening of God when you make a mistake because you’re on the pathway of spiritual transformation (renewal of your mind).

Sometimes, we dislike it when we get corrected, forgetting that we make many mistakes. God knows our hearts and weighs our motives (Proverbs 16:2). So He’s able to identify several areas in our lives that deserve His chastening for us to be upright before Him.

No child likes it when disciplined by his parents. However, when the child grows up, he remains thankful to the parents for treating him that way because it helped build a good character in him.

In the same way, when you’re enduring the chastening of God, don’t allow the devil to give you a wrong impression of Him. God knows you cannot understand everything He allows to happen in your life because of your spiritual maturity level. So instead of meditating on your pain, think about His love for you.

You’re a blessing.
