Help People But Don’t Show Favouritism

[1] “My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.” – James 2:1 (NIV)

What is favouritism? It is the practice of giving unfair preferential treatment to one person or group at the expense of one another. That sin is one of the most common sins in this generation. Today, getting something like a job you genuinely qualify for has become problematic if you are not connected to someone in a higher authority. Fairness is missing in many places. And it pains me that, unfortunately, it has crept in some churches.

There are some churches that don’t appoint elders who are not well-to-do, even though there might be other believers in the same congregation who are more spiritually mature than those appointed elders. And because of that, getting excellent spiritual counsel concerning ministry matters is becoming scarce. God have mercy!

Because Apostle James knew that favouritism would arise, he was inspired by the Holy Spirit to pen down in his epistle that believers in Christ must not show favouritism, especially in church. In other words, as a ministry leader, give everyone a fair opportunity to merit a certain Biblical standard of living and put conflict of interest aside. I believe that will solve many problems among people in the church many don’t discuss openly in public. Help people, but don’t show favouritism.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me treat fellow believers fairly well, no matter who they are or their general social status. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
